Hidden Gem: Carom at Meza

It's all very Sex and the City to enjoy a Cosmopolitan with girlfriends, but it's got a little old now. If you fancy something a bit different head to Carom at Meza (100 Wardour St, London) for a spiced cocktail and luscious interiors.

They also do scrumptious snacks, and at £6.50 for a cocktail we're not talking steep London prices. Considering the pedigree of chef Balaji Balachander who has worked as Executive Chef at Michelin-starred Benares in Mayfair, it's an excellent way to savour luxury at half the price.

Hidden Gem: St Christopher's Place

Nestled just behind the hideous furore of Oxford Street is a gorgeous cluster of shops, cafés, restaurants, offices and flats which goes under the name of St Christopher's Place.

It's a treat for the senses, with Mrs Kibble's Olde Sweet Shoppe (less naff than the name would imply), the spectrum of stationery at Prints International and the gorgeous smells of an enormous Carluccio's. It's the best place to get a sense of individuality and reality after a day of jostling and indecorum in the emporiums of Oxford Street...well worth a visit!

Hidden Gem: Fever Designs

Christmas is a festival of contrasts: joy of being with your loved ones and stress and the logistics; the pleasure of gift-giving and the anxiety of the strained overdraft; the delight in Christmas lights and the frustration at the heaving shops.

It was on a trip to Oxford Street to pick up a couple of items last Sunday evening (which has long since ceased being the day of rest) when I had a wave of claustraphobia. I took the side route back, and strolled down Eastcastle Street, to be greeted by the appealing spacious and visually stunning 'Fever Designs'

Crammed (tastefully) with a Ladurée-coloured assortment of dresses, I felt it would be rude not to go in and have a little peek. I was not disappointed.

One corner of the store was devoted to Vintage wear for a lovely root through, and the longest wall was lined with changing rooms constructed from the sort of gorgeously peeling doors I've always hoped to be cool enough to pull off in (or outside!) my house.

The wall of scarves sums up the feeling of Fever's flagship store: eclectic, creative and refined. The prices are reasonable, the clothes are beautiful and the staff incredibly friendly. A far better place to pick out a few Christmas gifts than the cattle markets of Oxford Street.

Red Candy Voted Britains Best Luxury and Unique Seller 2011!

Frooly the online marketplace for luxury and unique sellers launched this prestigious award in November of this year.

Britain’s Best Luxury & Unique Seller 2011 celebrates remarkable small retailers; great design, service and unique identity.  It’s a people’s choice award, with over 2000 people UK wide voting for their champion.

The award winner Red Candy is dedicated to red home furnishings and modern interior accessories. Founded in 2009 by Andrew Menzies, Andrew had the idea for the business when furnishing a new home and spending hours looking for the right items. Over the last two and a half years Red Candy’s popularity has grown phenomenally;

Andrew Menzies, Founder of Red Candy said:
“I'm absolutely over the moon about winning!  After the hours and hours spent building Red Candy from the ground up, it's so rewarding to be recognised. Tremendous thanks to our army of passionate red lovers that have faithfully supported us from the start. Viva red stuff!”

Gemma Baldan, Co Founder of Frooly:
“We’re thrilled that Red Candy won the title. We’re so passionate about independent retailers; our whole ethos is around celebrating and showcasing them. We want to make them more accessible, and turn the tide of clone high streets and clone shopping. This award has provided a great deal of recognition for the hard work and determination from all these businesses. We hope that we’ve contributed to more money spent with our independent sellers this Christmas”.

Product of the Week: Retro Vintage Style "Nutcracker" Christmas Stocking

Now that it's actually December, it's acceptable to get over-excited about Christmas. The tiny little gifts you can buy, the hideously sickly coffees you are permitted to drink, and the...giant socks you put the presents in!

Handmade by Court and Sparkle - the pseudonym of Philippa Harding - of Northampton, this gorgeous Christmas stocking is not just for the little 'uns. After all, why keep all the fun for them...?

Hidden Gem: Bloomsbury Coffee House

This Gem is so hidden, it doesn't even have a website! That doesn't stop it being gorgeous; it's the only spot in London I've found which hand makes its Chai Lattes (i.e. not from an instant powder), and which has the frustrating - but rather endearing - closing time of 5 p.m.

Their homemade cakes are, as you can see, something to get excited about. Moist, fresh and choca full of ingredients, they're well worth the £2 price tag.

Two small rooms are always playing host to students or residents; some working (they're not antiquated enough to not have WiFi), some reading, some talking. The atmosphere is adorable. What's more, it's only 10 minutes from Kings Cross station.

Christmas Gift Guide

Christmas is creeping up on us, and with only 23 shopping days left it can be hard to be creative with your shopping!

We all have that one person that we leave until the last possible second because its just too difficult to think about what to get them; they have everything, need nothing, and are the bane of the Christmas shop. Not any more!

Kick back and relax, mulled wine in hand. Forget that last minute headache, we've sorted it!

Still struggling? Take a look here for a little more inspiration:

Product of the Week: Grey Wool Beret with Purple Tartan Bow

It started to get cold recently. It started to get very, very cold. Rather than bemoan the change of seasons (who doesn't love a crisp winter morning?) I think it might be time to invest in some snuggly accessories.

This beautiful beret from Imogen's Imagination will do the trick rather splendidly!

This beauty is warm enough to keep the chill out and chic enough to keep the excitement in, it's rather a winner.

The proverbial cherry on the cake, the adorable bow harks back to the childhood love of all things festive without being saccharine sweet.

Bring on the Big Chill!

Hidden Gem: Fleet River Bakery

The legal hub of London is not where you'd necessarily expect to find one of the city's most adorable bijou cafés: Fleet River Bakery

Their coffee is the best I've tasted in London - exclusively using beans from the Monmouth Coffee Company - and their baked goods are to die for.  A daily selection of soups, quiches, frittatas, salads and seasonal sandwiches account for lunch, but they cater for many a breakfast requirement too.

Not content with serving the best coffee in the country (a sweeping statement, I know, but I'm willing to put my neck out for this) they also glass up a selection of wines and craft beers with which to wash down your home-made lunch.

Product of the Week: Reindeer and Trees Christmas Cards

There comes a time, round mid-November, when thinking about Christmas cards becomes wise and not just a festive fetish. That time, ladies and gents, has arrived. We all know Christmas is stressful enough without the need for last-minute dashes to Paperchase to get the dud packet of cards that no-one else wanted, so buying now is a wise move.

Another ire on the Christmas Card front is realising you've sent out the same cards to your friends as someone else you know. Having made what you think is an individual choice, you receive a card from 'Sandra' & 'Jimmy' that's the exact copy of the one you sent to 'Jeremy' & 'Sue'. Feeling a disorganised, unindividual citizen is never fun.

Funkestuff of Sheffield have designed some beautiful cards which will solve the above niggles.

The pack of four cards includes cute little reindeer:
and also Christmas Tree designs:

They're adorable, chic and individual. Now you've got that sorted you can kick back and enjoy the good side of Christmas commercialism (Chai Latte anyone?)...or just start thinking about the other things you can start to tick off on the never-ending festive to-do list!

Hidden Gem: Drink, Shop & Do

Kings Cross Station is not the first place one would look for a quirky Sunday nest to work, eat, brainstorm, shop and drink. Even if it's the second, third, fourth or hundredth place you look, you won't be disappointed if you find Drink, Shop & Do at 9 Caledonian Road, just two minutes from the bustle of Kings Cross and St Pancras.

The coffee looks and smells scrumptious (but they didn't have decaf so I had to go for a hot chocolate) and is served in gorgeous little vintage teacups, similar ones of which can be bought around the store. Every day has a stew, soup, salad and tart to munch on (breakfast is served before noon each day as well) and you can have a number of other simple, but beautifully prepared, dishes to savour as you sip your Vita Coco and absorb the artistic surroundings.

Housed in an old Victorian bathhouse the café turns into a bar by night, serving cocktails to the locals and visitors who travel to it.  That, alongside the afternoon teas, just about covers the 'Drink', so what about 'Shop'? Everything in the store is for sale; there's a little 'shop' at the entrance stocking mugs, cards and other elegant frivolities, but the lamps and other ornaments around the space are all for sale.

One of the unique aspects of the concept is the 'Do'. A number of workshops can be reserved (perfect for a birthday or hen party) like 'Knit Night' each Tuesday, 'Pin-Up' (Vintage Hair and Makeup), Wine Tasting, 'Cross Stitch Panties' and Cupcake decorating...

Endless hours of relaxation, retail therapy and creativity are to be had here.

Product of the Week: Seven Sinful Teas

It's tea time of year now, isn't it? We can't sun ourselves with a smoothie or a mojito in the setting sun any longer; we need to toast our freezing digits around a steaming cuppa.

Sometimes, though, it gets a bit dull just having the same old builders'.  The Seven Sinful Teas Sampler offers a perfect solution. Whether you're feeling  Lustful (ooh er), Wrathful, Gluttonous, Slothful, Greedy, Proud or Envious - whatever your emotional state - there's a blend for you somewhere in The Girl with the Golden Cup's sample sachet.

The delicate blends are sure to perk you up of an afternoon and get you ready to tackle whatever's next on your to-do list. Go on, you know you deserve it...!

Hidden Gem: Best Pubs to Snuggle Up In

The Commercial Tavern, nestled in über-cool Spitalfields just east of the 'City' proves that pubs don't have to be dusty and dotted around with cluttered displays of old equestrian 'bits' and bobs.

In the summer you can sip your tipple on the pavement under an indian-inspired parasol as the glittering lights of All Saints' flagship store flash in the distance. Now we're in winter you can settle down to a well-deserved pint in the main room. If you fancy more of a bar scene then climb the stairs to the specially-designed area.
It's not quite a cocktail bar and nor is it ye olde tavern, but the Commercial does know what it is: 100% true to itself. For a laid back evening and a fantastic atmosphere, look no further.

Support Britain's Independent Sellers

Well, the competition is well underway, and boy, is it hotting up...

The leader board is ever changing but we have some very close contenders. So, I thought I’d just recap on why we’ve launched Britains Best Luxury and Unique Seller 2011, and also on what you could win!

As you know, being who we are...Frooly, we love to champion independent sellers.

Why shop with a huge chain, put our towns out of pocket, wear the same as everyone else, and not bare our identity? First of all it’s really boring. I don’t want to look like everyone else, not because I don’t like them (because I do), but because wearing, eating, doing and going everywhere with everyone else, just isn’t fun. And nobody wants a life of no fun.

Now secondly, I may be out of turn here; I as much as any of us understand that sometimes, on those awkward Sundays when you’re running out of time and the in-laws are coming for lunch, that yes, ok, you have to pop to Tesco’s. I’m not adverse to this, I know it’s not always possible to buy / shop locally. But if we want keep choice, be individual and support our local economy, we really need to try.

An astounding 41% of Britain’s towns are now classed as ‘clone’,  identikit stores line our high streets throughout the country making individual towns indistinguishable. Another 23% are under threat of becoming ‘clone’- Britain's losing what makes it great, it's diverse communities and maybe even its very own identity?

Ok, so rant over. But please, as you fill up your stockings with presents this year, see if you can support a cool, independent seller. Or vote for your favourite and win £500 to spend!

Friday 4 November 2011

Product of the Week: Union Jack Bunting

The sad truth about November is that it's no longer the season for Barbeques and a cheeky glass of wine in the garden. The obvious solution: bring the outside in!

This gorgeous bunting from Vintage Home Sheffield harks back to the 40s and to the balmy summer evenings we saw for so long this year. Just think how lovely it would be to have this in the kitchen as you eat the summery foods you love so much. OK, sometimes we need a Sticky Toffee Pudding to make the dark nights bearable, but there's nothing better than the scent of a Barbeque mid-November...try it!

To be honest, who needs an excuse! Reminders of youth, summer and the decade of true patriotism all in a few pretty flags...

Oh hello new seller :: Naturally Heartfelt

Tell us about yourself?
Hello! I’m Stephanie and I live in Falmouth in beautiful South West Cornwall where there’s a lively interest in all things vintage. I love working with vintage and reclaimed materials because of the history and story within them. If I can bring an echo of that to the jewellery I make then I feel that I’m adding a little bit of heart and soul. Using text in my work adds another element with the sound energy of the words carrying meaning beyond the immediate word.

Your chosen picture inspires you, tell us why?
I have one of these hanging in my room so I can remind myself every day to keep on making and creating as that is my dream, even when life gets in the way and discouragement sets in. The Lotus is also called a 'mudflower'; with roots in the pond soil, yet the beautiful plant floats and blossoms on the surface. It’s great that something so lovely can come from mud, and this inspires me as well when it feels like I’m bogged down in the mire.

What possession do you most cherish?
I cherish my copy of The Secret Garden that I had when I was eight – I loved the story then and love it now. ‘Being alive is the Magic – being strong is the Magic. The Magic is in me …. It’s in every one of us.’ Like most of us, at different times in my life I've had to be strong and I go back to this book to boost my self-belief through the joy and excitement of the re- discovered garden.

Tell us about the product you've chosen in the photograph, why is it your absolute favourite?
This product has to be among my favourites as it was a special commission for my daughter and as well as beads made from poetry it has sea-glass and other timeworn treasures from the shore that she collected herself.  I love making a special piece of jewellery from things found or discovered.

What should we expect to see from you in the coming years?
I always seem to have more ideas than I have time to work on so I hope to keep on bringing out new products. I’m enjoying finding new sources of reclaimed or recycled paper for my new lanterns and want to experiment with different shapes and sizes. I also hope to create more bespoke pieces with special meaning.

Visit Stephanie's beautiful online shop:  http://www.naturallyheartfelt.co.uk/ for a taste of the other treasures that shes lovingly hand made.

Hidden Gem: Best Underrated Club in London

Soho has seen many guises; it was London's answer to La Pigalle all through the 1950s and is now a super-fashionable shopping and night spot for young Londoners.

Madame JoJo's is a gorgeous sparkler of a club tucked away on Brewer Street amongst the warren of streets of Soho. Everyone's heard of G-A-Y and the other legendary superclubs, but this one's a whole lot more fun...! It has transformed along with the district, having seen time as a Burlesque & Cabaret club in the 1980s, an 'Alternative' Cabaret venue through the 90s into the DJ-centric nightlife of today.

Every night of the week - except Monday - sees a different theme, ranging from White Heat (Independent Bands in an appropriately intimate setting), Tranny Shack (does what it says on the tin...free entry if you dress up accordingly!) and Kitsch Cabaret (every Saturday early evening) right through to Free Your Soul (a chilled Sunday evening of World Music). My personal favourite is Saturday's 'Lost and Found' which is a jiving night of 50s & 60s Jump Blues, Rockabilly and Northern Soul. It's got to be the least pretentious, least sleazy place to be on a Saturday night in London. It's £8 on the door, and well worth the entry.

Britain's Best Luxury & Unique Seller 2011... The Contenders!

So, the race to find Britain’s Best Luxury and Unique Seller 2011 has been underway for just over a week, and wow, do we have some strong contenders.

We love this competition. It’s great to see so many people passionate about supporting our independent sellers, we've had hundreds of votes in just the first week! Britain’s small businesses really are the point of difference in our towns and cities, and sadly many are under threat. They give us choice and provide us with an identity as individuals.

Please support them; show your love, and vote!

So who’s in the running?
Aha! Now that would be telling. Currently we have four businesses that are almost neck and neck. Now, of course, I can’t divulge who that is, as I wouldn’t want to skew the figures.  But it is very exciting from where we’re sitting!

Win a £500 shopping spree!
This competition is all about promoting those secret finds in that we relish. Get voting and help promote the UK’s best small retailers, plus be in with the chance to get £500 in your pocket just before Christmas!

Product of the Week: For Halloween

Contrary to popular belief the next festival approaching - in the UK at least - is not Christmas (that’s in December, I’d like to point out). No, the next celebration we have to look forward to is the glorious Halloween, and increase my anticipation of the somewhat underrated festival - I think it could be much better celebrated without Tesco’s tack plastic contributions - I hunted out a few products that got me itching to trick or treat.
Flock LDN Tangerine Bandage Skirt
First up is this lovely Bandage Skirt from Flock LDN. Bandage skirts have fast become a wardrobe staple since the Hervé Leger revival of the BodyCon a few years back, and this packs a zesty punch with a vibrant colour. Not only is this reminiscent of pumpkins (in the best possible way!), but it will also brighten up your day as the greyness sinks in.

Chocolate Orange Bath Bomb
Picture yourself on a Monday evening after a day in the office. You’re probably cold after your journey home, and all you want is some nice relaxation and a reminder that life really is pretty great. So, what do you do? You reach for a box set and have a soak in the bath (possibly with a glass of vino). I have found a gorgeous little addition to that to make you feel seasonal, a Chocolate Orange Bath Bomb - it’s practically Terry’s in the bath - to make you feel indulged and spicy (and more importantly, ready to battle the next day). Plus, you get two in your box, so there's another one left to look forward to...

Have a lovely weekend!

Hidden Gem: Yumchaa

Coffee seems to have taken over the British consciousness, but we mustn't forget the origins of our 'teatime': the lovely cuppa. Fighting the corner of a good mug of cha is Yumchaa, a London-based company championing the power of tea (and scrummy sweet things too) with a number of physical stores and appearances at a number of London's coolest markets.

Yumchaa has two stores in London; one in Camden and the other nestled just off Oxford Sreet in Soho. It's a far more enticing prospect for a post-Selfridges (I can dream!) pick me up than your run-of-the-mill Starbucks; the range of brews here is quite extraordinary and varies across herbal, green, black and white teas. There are - for those of you who like to forget it’s freezing outside - iced teas (think a Starbucks iced fruit drink) which truly taste of tea. My pick is the Mango Mango - it isn’t cheap at £3.20, but it is bursting with green tea flavour and mangoey freshness.
Add to this the attraction of free wifi, a genuinely ‘independent’ feeling and delicious freshly-baked cakes and we have, ladies and gents, a winner in the beverage vending stakes!

To buy their products and discover a bit more, visit their website: http://www.yumchaa.com

Our Hidden Gem of the Week:

Now it’s cold...best comfort food spot in the capital - S&M Cafe, Spitalfields

Now, I know that not everyone is based down here in the Big Smoke, but I have discovered a real corker for those of you who are, or who might be down here some time in the future: S&M Café in Spitalfields.

It’s not as kinky as it sounds; in fact, it’s distinctly wholesome, with a menu full of freshly-squeezed orange juice, bangers and mash and lovely cream Hot Chocolate. A definite one to stop at especially if you’re a stickler for Fairtrade, Gluten-Free, British Comfort Food. Yummy and saintly; could you as for more?

Oh, one more thing: it’s just opposite the incredible Spitalfields Market, making it a great post-splurge stop off point and fantastic for people-watching. Enjoy!

Product of the Week:

Lowie Vintage Floral Print Scarf

It’s getting to ‘cold’ season; not just when the temperatures drop from the unseasonal high, but that hideous time of year when most people’s diets consist mainly of Lemsip and feverishly consumed Oranges. Vitamin C boosting tips aside (eat Kiwis, they have far more than the orange family...!) it really is worth investing in a versatile scarf.
So, which would be my pick? I’d definitely recommend this beauty from Lowie. It’s ditsy, sophisticated and has plenty of colours in it. Imagine; you could wear it to dinner over your favourite LBD after having worn it with your staple red coat to work, or as a quasi-cardigan over your little summer dress in the central-heated office. It would even double up as a barnet-protector on those horrid days when you forget your umbrella...

Big love for this, and definitely wanting one to keep the London smog away.

Its Summer all over again... for now anyway

So here i am sat on a train down to the big smoke. Now unusually for the time of year, which i have to keep reminding myself is autumn, it's really hot, like 28 degrees hot. So where I would normally be wrapped up in fur, thick tights and gloves, I'm sat here in some shorts. Not the sporty type shorts, nor denimn, but pretty cotton shorts tied with a large bow.  The weather, plays such a huge part in my life, well most peoples if your British, that when it's warm in winter my traditional shopping habits get all confused.

I need to by a new coat, but instead I've found myself pondering over flimsy summer shoes, it is autumn, and next week it will probably be snowing, I had to have the mental argument with myself to avoid the shoe purchase. It is autumn

But in light of this hot autumn thing, the sunshine, sunglasses, shorts and beer - let's relive summer, I am saying no to thick wool tights, no to boots, jackets, coats and hats. It's summer all over again and we are going to embrace it in all it's glory.

So here are a couple of summery treasures which will keep you warm this winter, in spirit that is!

Out and About: The quest for some real life hidden gems...

Picnic, Reading

In amongst the clinically formulated chain stores of central Reading, wedged (quite literally) between coffee warlords Costa and Starbucks, sits Picnic, the town's greatest café and lunchspot.

The Outside comes indoors into this glittering jewel of a café - too small to even have a loo, not that it seems to put anyone off - which is packed by a rolling sequence of clientele; morning cappuccino junkies, interns doing the coffee run at 11.00, office workers searching out a tasty home-cooked lunch, and shoppers refuelling after an arduous battle through the department stores of the Oracle.

Each day they serve, in addition to their quite staggering array of sandwiches, two "Picnic Boxes" a filling alongside couscous & fresh lettuce - think Cumin Yoghurt and Almond Chicken or Home-made bacon quiche - and a freshly made soup.

http://www.picnicfoods.co.uk/

Planet Organic, London

OK, so this might not be an utterly undiscovered arena, but this Aladdin's Cave of Organic food and lifestyle gadgets is fused with a Café and take-out food stop. Everything in here is yummy, responsibly sourced and fresh; a real novelty in faced-paced London. My favourite store is at Torrington Place, just off Goodge Street, and its position right by UCL means its always filled with intellectual types who will massage your inactive brain cells whilst you nourish your body.

It would be absurdly easy to walk out with little purchases like the Bobble bottle (a refillable water bottle with inbuilt filter - why didn't I think of that!) and your bodyweight in Vitamin supplements, but it's probably worth avoiding these pitfalls and just heading for the groceries, unless you have a far healthier bank balance than mine - it's not cheap in here!

Anyone who lives in the London area can have Fresh nutritious goodies delivered to their door including Fruit & Veg Boxes, just-prepared meals, Fresh juices and scrummy soups. For everyone else, this is eating for those who enjoy knowing they're refuelling well whilst savouring every bite. A sort of Dean & DeLuca for the streets of London and less commercial than Whole Foods Market, it's an essential foodie pit-stop for lunch, coffee or a whole cupboard re-stock.

Favourite Finds...

Rock My Vintage: Lucas Jack Green Stone Ring

This is one of those fantastic finds that can be worn day and night (although it might be a touch uncomfortable to sleep in!), with an uber-girlie lace dress or with a grungy all-black ensemble. It's elegant yet quirky, classic yet modern and bold yet subtle.

It's available in two sizes to make it perfect for the dainty-fingered as well as those with slightly chunkier digits. Imagine how pleased you'd be to receive something like this as a gift: I'm thinking of stocking up to hand out for birthdays and Christmas, it's so ridiculously versatile.

The 24 Carat gold detailing, black body and jade stone go with almost any colour scheme under the sun. Just remember to take it off for the washing up...
